Estancia Santa María

General Las Heras · 1882

A day at home, not an event.

50 minutes from Buenos Aires

01The invitation

You're not visiting. You're coming home.

Santa María is not a restaurant, a tour, or a staged show. It's a family home that opens its doors — one group at a time — to share an entire day at its own pace.

Guests sit at a single long table and share the asado, the wines, and the sobremesa — that long, unhurried stretch after the meal that Argentines consider the best part of any gathering — with the family who has lived here for four generations.

The place

The house

A family estancia from 1882, with its tower, its history, and open campo all around. Nothing staged for the photo — everything here is real and still standing.

The heart

The long table

The asado as ritual: slow-cooked beef over wood fire, hand-picked wines, and a family dessert. Eat slowly, toast often, talk endlessly.

The soul

The sobremesa

The moment nobody takes anymore. Coffee, the tablecloth still laid, and conversation that's worth more than any excursion.

03Since 1882

A story money can't buy.

“The house carries the family name. We didn't decorate it for you — we opened it.”

— The hosts

It all began with a Basque great-grandfather who crossed the Atlantic in the late 19th century. His brother got off in Uruguay; he kept going to Buenos Aires and made his way to General Las Heras, where he built the estancia with his own hands. The tower was his way of watching the horizon.

The Aberdeen Angus and Hereford herds once competed at La Rural, Argentina's legendary agricultural fair. The artisan honeys come from hives that still stand on the property. The small pink house where the first generation lived sits at the edge of the park. And the flan de la abuela Mimi — grandma Mimi's crème caramel, passed down through three generations — is the sweetest way to close any day. General Las Heras, in case you didn't know, is the national capital of Pato, the Argentine horseback sport.
